New users' first edits were usually on their profile page. However, it was actually kind of scary for them. They were greeted by a nearly blank page with a confusing layout, and couldn't even make edits unless they knew some wikitext.
The goal of redesigning the profile page was to increase editor and community engagement, and to make wikis a friendlier place for newbies without alienating veteran editors. We gave them an easier way to introduce themselves to the community with a fun fill-in-the-blank Q&A (no wikitext required), and a snazzier, more intuitive UI. We were delighted to see editors new and old get creative with these profiles.
